Prequalification of CO2 capture. At the end of June, Gassnova and Statoil will start the joint process of prequalifying potential suppliers of capture facilities for full-scale CO2 capture at Mongstad (refinery and combined heat and power plant (CHP)). Participation in the prequalification is only open to suppliers of amine-based technology, as this is the only technology regarded as being sufficiently matured.

Ambition to reduce oil sands emissions. A 5-year technology plan will provide the basis for initial reductions of up to 25%, with further reductions of more than 40 % by 2025. The first phase of the oil sands project, the Leismer Demonstration Project, is on schedule and will start up later this year. After production ramp-up the project will attain an initial production of 10 000bpd, with the possibility of an increase to 20 000 bpd, pending regulatory approval. The next phase, called Corner, is planned to be a 40 000 - 60 000 barrel-per-day facility.

ConocoPhillips announced that it will not be renewing its membership in the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP). This action enables the company to better focus its efforts on ensuring fair and equitable treatment of the transportation sector and its consumers and on expanding opportunities for greater near-term GHG reductions through increased use of natural gas.

EPA: Greenhouse Gases Threaten Public Health and the Environment / Science overwhelmingly shows greenhouse gas concentrations at unprecedented levels due to human activity. On-road vehicles contribute more than 23 percent of total U.S. GHG emissions. EPA’s proposed GHG standards for light-duty vehicles, a subset of on-road vehicles, would reduce GHG emissions by nearly 950 million metric tons and conserve 1.8 billion barrels of oil over the lifetime of model year 2012-2016 vehicles.

How Can the Natural Gas Industry Support the Quest for a Truly Sustainable Energy System. Depending on the quality of fuel, the combustion of natural gas results in at least 25-30% less CO2 than oil and at least 40-50% less than coal. Today 41% of the emissions are related to power generation and if we could switch all the world’s

ConocoPhillips Statement on American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. Under the provisions of the proposed bill, U.S. refiners will have a legal compliance obligation to purchase allowances for GHG emissions. The reduction in U.S. refining capacity that could result from this policy would lead to increased imports of transportation fuel, erosion of national energy security, and loss of American jobs.
